(2018)

This report presents the findings from a review of approaches to the communication of uncertainty in the context of advice to decision-makers.

Summary

The review was carried out to support the work of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and other Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies (SNCBs). SNCBs should articulate and present scientific uncertainty in their advice in ways that facilitate informed, transparent, proportionate and robust decision-making. The overarching objective of this study was to generate recommendations of approaches that could be used to communicate scientific uncertainty to regulators of marine industries in the UK. It has aimed to contribute to greater consistency and proportionality in the manner in which SNCBs communicate their scientific advice to regulators, in the context of plans and projects examined by the latter.
