Post background

The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is the statutory adviser to Government on UK and international nature conservation. One of JNCC’s key roles is provision of biodiversity related evidence. 

EU exit poses an unprecedented opportunity to transform policy affecting the environment in the UK. To deliver such transformations, a range of evidence will need to be assimilated and analysed to develop options and make policy choices, and to implement policies at a cost that is proportionate.  JNCC can make a critical contribution by analysing its biodiversity datasets alongside those of others (agricultural incomes and the effect of CAP, biodiversity, flood control, Pillar II and woodland expansion), utilising its skills in data analysis. A senior analyst is needed to help JNCC take forward this important area.

The post will work across JNCC Evidence supporting terrestrial and, potentially, marine aspects of the work.

The role will involve strong partnership working with a range of partners with various analytical capabilities across the UK and more broadly. Additionally, the post will work alongside the existing technical expertise within JNCC to create rapid demonstrations of novel approaches ahead of developing more permanent solutions.

 

Post Duties

The main duties of the post are to:

  • Carry out a variety of analyses, working with JNCC colleagues with specialist technical skills were appropriate.
  • Assess and audit appropriateness of particular techniques against emerging applications, particularly within the adoption of a Natural Capital based approach.
  • Maintain a current overview of relevant methods and research in analytics.
  • Maintain an overview of the capabilities and relative strengths of the existing relevant analytical expertise across the UK and more broadly.
  • Communicate and promote the techniques to support environmental policy and management within the UK.

  • Good understanding of a broad range of techniques for modelling complex and dynamic systems, how and when these can be applied and able to assess outputs (Essential)
  • Good understanding of the theory and application of a broad range of multivariate techniques (Essential)
  • Competent in the use of “R” and can rapidly establish more complex processing chains using existing packages (Essential)
  • Understanding of data management principles and awareness of key policy/legislative drivers around accessibility of data (Essential)

Hours of work
Normal hours of work for the post are 36 hours per week over a 5-day period, Monday to Friday.  Flexi time is available
 

Annual Leave Entitlement

The annual leave allowance is 25 days per year, rising to 30 days per year after 5 years service.  There are also 12 days public and privilege leave.  Staff appointed on a part time basis will receive this pro rata.
