National Plant Monitoring Scheme

Funding Partners

BSBI, CEH, JNCC, Plantlife

Summary of Scheme

The National Plant Monitoring Scheme is a project that coordinates, collects and analyses data on plant communities in small plots across the UK, mostly within semi-natural habitats. Currently, there are limited annual data on plant abundance and change, or on the quality status of much of the semi-natural habitat outside of protected sites.  Work has been undertaken since 2008 to establish a robust design for this scheme to ensure that it produces unbiased estimates of plant community change within different habitat types.  Volunteer recorders attend training sessions to help them to participate effectively at the more information-rich levels of the scheme.  The scheme fills a very significant gap within UK biodiversity surveillance, providing the ability to assess plant community change alongside trends in other biodiversity and providing a measure of changes in habitat condition. The design of the scheme is such that trends for a considerable number of plant species and habitats will be generated. In addition, there should be the capability to link plant community changes with changes in other species groups (such as the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme and Breeding Bird Survey), and include assessments of ecosystem service delivery, particularly if considered in conjunction with existing monitoring schemes and any future national pollinator and pollination monitoring schemes.
