Defra: The Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) (MMO) Inshore/Offshore Boundaries
Enclosed is JNCC's response to the consultation from Defra on the Inshore/Offshore Boundaries relating to the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009). Submitted on 12th February 2010.
Summary of key points
JNCC supports the consensus of
the Marine Bill consultation responses that marine plan areas
should be designated on bio-geographic areas rather than political
boundaries. We also welcome that Defra are taking into account
regional sea divisions, allowing for an holistic integrated
ecosystem approach and aiming for consistency with European and
international level considerations, such as MSFD and OSPAR.
The set of considerations
proposed by Defra include the issues that JNCC see as a priority
for consideration in the selection of marine plan areas, i.e.
bio-geographic regions (Charting Progress regional areas), OSPAR
regions, MSFD marine regions, ICES eco-regions and nature
