DBERR: The future of nuclear power: the role of nuclear power in low carbon UK economy.
(2007)
JNCC Consultation 0720
Submission by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee
Enclosed is a letter and full response from JNCC in reply to a consultation from DBERR (the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform) in relation to Nuclear Power. Submitted on 10th October 2007.

Summary of key points

Our advice in respect of "The Future of Nuclear Power" consultations is attached to this letter. We make three main recommendations:

Energy production and consumption within the united kingdom has global environmental impacts.  Government policy on reducing the UK's global environmental footprint should be taken into account when considering nuclear new-build.

All of the sustainable development principles (as enuciated in the UK Sustainable Development Strategy) should be considered as part of the nuclear new-build programme, not merely the limited areas of carbon emissions, and security of supply.  In particular, we strongly caution against considering low carbon technologies to be necessarily sustainable per se.
