Overview

The EMODnet broad-scale seabed habitat map for Europe 2016 (AKA EUSeaMap 2016) is a predictive habitat map which covers the seabed of large area of European waters. The mapped area includes; The Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and the North-East Atlantic . Habitats are described in the EUNIS and MSFD predominant habitat classifications.

Associated confidence maps are also available which give a break down confidence in predicted habitats into high, medium, and low.

Classification system

Input data layers (note that the data layers used vary by region)

  • Seabed substrate type
  • Depth to seabed
  • Amount of light reaching the seabed
  • Wave disturbance at the seabed
  • Kinetic energy at the seabed caused by tidal currents and waves
  • Dissolved oxygen concentration at the seabed
  • Temperature at the seabed

Outputs

  • Seabed habitat map based on the EUNIS and MSFD predominant habitat classification
  • Confidence layers

Methods

Informaton on the principles behind making broad-scale seabed habitat maps can be found on the EMODnet Seabed Habitats portal. A more detailed description of the process is give in the EMODnet Phase 2 final report.

Download

EUSeaMap 2016 can be viewed and downloaded from the EMODnet Seabed Habitats portal access data page. A Web Mapping Service (WMS) feed is also available.

Relationship to past projects

EUSeaMap was first produced under Phase 1 of EMODnet Seabed Habitats (2009-2012).

Phase 2 of EMODnet Seabed Habitats (2013-2016) has produced EUSeaMap 2016 which supersedes previous versions of EUSeaMap.

Under Phase 2 the extent of the mapped area has been increased by incorporating new input data layers from regions previously not included in EUSeaMap. Areas that were included in previous versions of EUSeaMap have also incorporated the most up-to-date data available for the regions. Confidence maps for EUSeaMap 2016 have also been included for the first time.
