Fifth Quinquennial Review of Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife
and Countryside Act, 1981
Recommendations from the fifth Quinquennial Review Working
Group, comprising staff from the JNCC Support Company, Natural
England, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Countryside Council for
Wales, were approved by the Joint Committee and the advice
submitted to the Secretary of State for the Environment in December
2008, and copied to ministers in the devolved administrations.
The JNCC is recommending the addition of
eleven animal species to Schedule 5, including the pool frog
(Northern clade only) Pelophylax lessonae; the common
skate Dipturus batis; and the pine hoverfly Blera
fallax. Two plant species are proposed for addition to
Schedule 8, namely the rock nail lichen Calicium
corynellum and lungwort Lobaria pulmonaria. Three
animal species are proposed for removal from Schedule 5 and five
plant species for from Schedule 8.
In addition, we recommend increased protection
for 6 animal species, and reduced protection for 2 animal
species.
