JNCC support for Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies projects

JNCC is pursuing an OT strategy that aims to provide support for both small-scale, OT proposed, projects and more strategic work that supports both long term OT capacity building and UK Government policy objectives. Understanding the value of the environment to the OT economies, assessing the threats to this value and the identification of possible responses are all key underpinning priorities for JNCC. During the year JNCC managed environmental mainstreaming pilot projects for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the BVI and Falkand Islands. These involved wide, island-based consultation to establish priorities for action in environmental management in coming years. The work is continuing in both OTs during the coming year, funded by JNCC, and this very successful approach which received high level political support in both territories will be extended to other OTs in the future.

During the year JNCC has been involved in managing, or supporting, 20 OT/CD projects. Some of these projects were completed during the year, others are ongoing.  JNCC ‘s role in these projects varies, some managed on its own behalf and others for Defra or the FCO.  During the Financial Year 2011/12 JNCC spent approximately £350,000 in the OTs and CDs using its own funds and funding from Defra and the FCO.

Sourcing Funds for Nature Conservation Projects in the Overseas Territories

The terms 'funding sources' in this context covers both financial and non-financial support (e.g. studentships, equipment, personnel). The funding sources can come from any organisation across a wide range of sectors (e.g. nature conservation, climate change, recycling etc). Funding sources are being sought for both marine and terrestrial projects.

Tips for completing funding applications

JNCC has provided guidance notes for anyone who is thinking about applying for grants.

Funding Database

A database of potential funding sources is available.

If you aware of a funding source or a potential funding source that could be added to the database please contact the JNCC (please add OT to the subject line).

How you can help

Are you employed by a Charitable Trust or a University if so, please help us by completing this brief, user-friendly questionnaire. It should only take 5 minutes to complete and will help us to assess current and potential support for future nature conservation projects in the OT's.
