David Stroud©JNCCDavid Stroud, JNCC’s Senior Ornithological Adviser, has been appointed MBE in the New Year Honours list for services to nature conservation.

David has lead responsibility within the country conservation agencies for the UK's national implementation of the Ramsar Convention and its international linkages. He has served as a member of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel, and was appointed as thematic expert for Ramsar site designation and management in 2005. He was Chair of the CoP7 contact group relating to Res. VII.11 (Strategic Framework for the implementation of the Ramsar Convention), and Chair of the CoP9 contact group on Avian Influenza issues.  He has also chaired the UK's Ramsar Committee, and helps to co-ordinate the UK extensive bird monitoring programmes. He has a particular research expertise in peatlands.

Working with others, particularly at Wetlands International, David has made a considerable long-term contribution to the regular preparation of global waterbird population estimates.

David has made a long term research investment in Greenland white-fronted geese. This is reflected in publications stretching back over 30 years, and his unfailing commitment to the Wader Study Group is proven by his many publications and record as a long-standing officer in that organisation.

David received the first AEWA (African - Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement) Waterbird Conservation Award in 2005, in the individual category. The award was for his outstanding contributions to the development and implementation of the AEWA Agreement.

David has a considerable portfolio of past successes, including being Chairman of the UK Joint Working Party of Special Protection Areas and Ramsar sites, Chairman of the UK Rare Breeding Birds Panel, and is a Member of the UK Ornithological Expert Panel on Avian Influenza.

David has been keen to state that he has spent most of his career working as part of a team, and this honour is also for his colleagues.

Peter Bridgewater, Chair of JNCC, commented:

"David's award is richly deserved on a personal level because of his great knowledge, commitment and enthusiasm. Also, JNCC and its Support Company can take pleasure in the recognition of the excellence of our staff.  I also believe David’s commitment to international work, through Ramsar and the Convention on Migratory Species, is recognised by this award.  From my former role as Secretary General of Ramsar, I would like to acknowledge that aspect of David's work".
