Training and Research Programme Steering Group
St. Helena Island is a member of the Training and Research Programme Steering
Group which drives the direction of the OT Training and
Research Programme.
Research Priorities 2011
JNCC asks the OTs and CDs for information about their top 3
research priorities each year (via members of the OT and CD Training and Research Programme
Steering Group. These priorities are used to inform a number of
funding decisions including the JNCC Research Contributions.
Training
JNCC is able to support the OTs and CDs with funding to
attend environmental training courses.
Marine Diploma
JNCC has supported 1 person from the Agricultural and Natural
Resources Directorate on St. Helena to attend a Marine Biology
Diploma course from June 2011 to January 2012.
Education resources
A series of education materials were produced by Emma
Bennett for the South Atlantic Invasive Species Project for use by
schools on St Helena. To make the information directly relevant
twenty invasive species were selected, each with an impact in
the local environment. View and or download these materials

Bastard Gumwood Recovery Project
In 2011 JNCC made a contribution to the Bastard Gumwood Recovery
Project on St. Helena.
Invasive Species Project
In 2010, for the International Year of Biodiversity, the UK
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), has
funded a series of invasive species projects across the UK Overseas
Territories. This has been coordinated by the Joint Nature
Conservation Committee. Project activities on St
Helena were:
- The implementation of a project to recover the Bastard Gumwood
and restore native habitats thus preventing the ongoing spread of
invasive alien plant species.
- The implementation of a programme to clear the highly invasive
Pheasant Tail Fern from identified priority areas within the
biodiversity rich mountain peaks of St Helena.
