'Natural Capital in the Caribbean and South Atlantic Overseas Territories: Valuation, Vulnerability and Monitoring Change' (late 2016 onwards)

JNCC embarked on the ‘Natural Capital in the Caribbean and South Atlantic Overseas Territories’ project in late 2016.  The project will provide an assessment of natural capital in the UK’s Caribbean and South Atlantic Overseas Territories, and will build capacity to monitor environmental change and to integrate environmental evidence into economic policy making and infrastructure planning.  The work builds on a body of existing work and techniques supported and pioneered by the UK Government in the two regions.  The project is funded by the Conflict, Stability and Security (CSSF) fund.  A series of reports, one for each Territory, and a final overarching report will be produced.  Additional reports produced during the lifetime of the project (e.g. workshop reports, scoping reports, interim reports) are to be published as part of a series of ‘Supplementary Reports.  Further information on the project is available here>>>



South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands Implementation Plan for the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) (2017)

The South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands Implementation Plan for the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) (PDF, 3.15Mb) was published in early 2017. It covers the period from 2016 to 2020.



Ascension Island Biosecurity Review (June 2016)

The Ascension Island Biosecurity Review (PDF, 6.2Mb) reviews existing legislation, biosecurity practices and risk to Ascension Island, and makes pragmatic recommendations on a way forward that will form a sustainable biosecurity system that is commensurate with risk and on-Island capability. 


Marine Spatial Planning for the Falkland Islands ‘Framing the process’ Workshop report (May 2016)

The Marine Spatial Planning Workshop report  'Framing the Process'  presents a summary of the workshop sessions and the main recommendations to inform the next phase of Marine Spatial Planning implementation in the Falkland Islands.  The report was prepared as part of the Darwin Plus project DPLUS027 ‘Marine Spatial Planning in the Falkland Islands’.  More information on the project and the workshop is available on the SAERI website. 


South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands: Island-wide census of black-browed and grey-headed albatrosses (April 2016)

The Island-wide census of black-browed and grey-headed albatrosses for South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands was published in April 2016. 


Protection of the critically endangered Gumwood habitat at Peak Dale, St Helena (April 2016)

The final project report on developing an effective working method for the conservation of endemic St Helena gumwoods at Peak Dale was published in April 2016.



OT Data Access and Common Areas of Shared Interest Workshop (May 2015)

JNCC hosted a workshop on 5 May 2015 in Peterborough, which covered two separate areas: OT data access, and common areas of shared interest.  Two workshop reports are available:

Turks & Caicos Islands cross-territory data management workshops (February 2015)

The workshop report, Understanding our islands: How to get the best out of our GIS and Data, was published in July 2015.  This is a report on the cross-territory data management workshops held on the Turks & Caicos Islands in February 2015.


Turks and Caicos Islands Green Economy (February 2015)

The Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) Green Economy project is about helping TCI organisations work together to develop ways of integrating the environment into strategic decisions to ensure that the people who live here, alongside business, and nature, thrive over the long term.  The project was funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), managed by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), and delivered by Dialogue Matters.  The final report was published in February 2015.



South Atlantic OT Regional Workshop Report (August 2014)

JNCC collaborated with the Ascension Island Government in June 2014 to run a regional (South Atlantic) workshop which brought together international and regional technical experts to look at four work areas: Marine Protected Areas, Sustainable Fisheries, Seabird Monitoring and Biodiversity/Environmental Action Planning. The workshop report and presentations are available here>>


Environmental Mainstreaming/Economic valuation reports (July 2014)

The following reports on environmental mainstreaming/economic valuation were produced in July 2014:

  • Toward a Green economy on Anguilla: A corporate ecosystem service review of the tourism sector

1st OT GIS Conference (Gibraltar, October 2013)

The 1st Overseas Territories GIS Conference was held in Gibraltar on 8 & 9 October 2013. Copies of the abstracts from the workshop are available here>>>


Falkland Islands ACAP Implementation Plan (September 2013)

An updated Falkland Islands ACAP Implementation Plan was published in September 2013, building on the first version of the plan, published in 2010.


Aichi achievements (July 2013)

The report Recent Conservation Achievements in the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies and their contributions to national Aichi Biodiversity Targets was published in July 2013.


Lionfish workshops (February 2013 and July 2013)

Two workshops were held in 2013, in Anguilla (6 February 2013), and in the Cayman Islands (July 2013), to discuss a Lionfish response strategy.  Copies of the workshop reports are available below:

In March 2013, JNCC co-ordinated a workshop to review progress on the implementation of the UK Overseas Territories biodiversity strategy.

Anguilla's 'Greening the Economy' project (March 2013)

In 2013, JNCC co-ordinated a project with the Government of Anguilla on 'Green economy'. This is a component of a larger project being managed by the United Kingdom’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) on behalf of the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Environmental Mainstreaming in the Falkland Islands (May 2012)

British Virgin Islands Green Economy Project (February 2012)

In 2012, JNCC co-ordinated a project on 'Green economy' in the British Virgin Islands. This is a component of a larger project being managed by the United Kingdom’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) on behalf of the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).



UK OTs & CDs: 2011 Biodiversity Snapshot

The UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies: 2011 Biodiversity Snapshot is an update of the review of biodiversity in the UK Overseas Territories which was published by JNCC in 1999.


IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Conference on Islands and Overseas Entities (December 2011)

The final report of the IUCN conference on "Islands and Overseas Entities Contribution to Biodiversity Conservation and the Fight against Climate Change" (European Parliament, 20th December 2011) was published in February 2012.



Amphibians and Reptiles in the UK Overseas Territories (July 2010)

The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust (ARC) published a species inventory and overview of conservation and research priorities of Amphibians and Reptiles of the UK Overseas Territories, Crown Dependencies and Sovereign Base Areas in July 2010, with financial support from JNCC.



Geoconservation in the UK Overseas Territories (2009)

The report Geoconservation in the Overseas Territories of the UK (PDF, 816kb) was commissioned by JNCC to help improve understanding of the geological importance and diversity of the UK Overseas Territories. A further aim was to broadly review the geoconservation activity being carried out there, and to identify any particularly significant threats to important geological features.


Tristan da Cunha ACAP Plan (2009)

Tristan da Cunha's Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) Implementation Plan was published by JNCC and the Tristan da Cunha Government in 2009.



Climate Change in the UKOTs (2008)

These documents form part of a series on climate change in the UK Overseas Territories prepared by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute for JNCC. They were funded by the Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP) with assistance from the Commonwealth Foundation. Documents in the series:

The Review of Ramsar Sites in Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies was produced in 2005.



Biodiversity: The UK Overseas Territories (1999)

Biodiversity: the UK Overseas Territories was published by JNCC in 1999. The report provides a profile of the biodiversity of the United Kingdom's Overseas Territories as a contribution to the development of plans for their conservation and sustainable use.
