This Report is intended to provide a vehicle, in the form of a narrative and stand-alone text, for the development of JNCC's view of a Framework for UK Nature Conservation.
Introduction
This Report is intended to provide a vehicle, in the form of a
narrative and stand-alone text, for the development of JNCC's view
of a Framework for UK Nature Conservation. This work is being
carried out under the auspices of the Joint Committee's Vision
Working Group. This Report is a work in progress. As
the Vision Working Group develops its conclusions, so the text will
be revised to accommodate these. Although the Report
currently focuses on the United Kingdom, when the Framework is
developed, we will consider the degree to which it may be
applicable to other countries, including the UK’s Overseas
Territories. During 2006, the Joint Committee is likely to
consult, and engage with, the country nature conservation agencies,
Government Departments and other stakeholders more formally in its
further development.
The text is set out in two parts:
i. Part 1 provides
information on the United Kingdom's biodiversity and geodiversity
heritage, describes the direction of nature conservation effort in
the UK over the last 60 years, and summarises the current state and
trends in its biodiversity and geodiversity, so far as these are
known.
ii. Part 2
summarises a number of important issues that have gained in
prominence over the last 20 years, and sets out a possible future
framework for nature conservation.
