While Government go through the process of appointing a new JNCC Chairman to lead the organisation into the next stage of its development, Professor David Ingram OBE, already an independent member of the Committee, has been appointed Acting Chairman.

Professor Ingram, Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, said of his appointment "I am delighted to take over this important role in the UK's nature conservation remit. To be able to lead this important organisation at a very crucial time in its development is a tremendous privilege. We are putting in place a strategy and forward plan that will improve the JNCC's effectiveness in the future, and to be able to help shepherd this process through to fruition will be a very rewarding responsibility".

The decision on who will be the new Chairman of JNCC is expected in the Spring of 2004.
