Updates made to species designations collation

• Added a column into the 'Master List' and 'Summary for each taxon' sheets which contains links to the NBN Gateway Interactive Mapper for the relevant species.
• Added Lycia zonaria subsp. britannica to the 1997 BAP list, a previous omission.

• 'Current Taxon Name' column has been updated.

Corrections:

• All references to the 'Bonn Convention' removed as this is another name for the Convention on Migratory Species.
• The RDB designation for 'Carabus intricatus' as endangered had been archived and therefore absent from the spreadsheet. This was incorrect and has been amended.
• The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 2010: Schedules 3 and 4 updated to Schedules 4 and 5 respectively. The Schedules retain their meanings ('Animals which may not be taken or killed in certain ways' and 'European protected species of plants') and their designated species.

• This update includes the lists OSPAR, Northern Ireland Priority Species, Red List of Water Beetles and 'The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2010)' (downloaded 13/12/2010). Note: the water beetles list de-designates a number of Notable B species which no-longer appear in the collation.
• Species authorites and attributes were added to the master list and summary table, along with minor formatting changes.
• The taxon version keys for the following beetles were updated: Potamonectes griseostriatus (NBNSYS0000007575 to NHMSYS0020704746), Mycetoporus longicornis (NBNSYS0000023593 to NHMSYS0020704744)and Sibinia primitus (NBNSYS0000025479 to NBNSYS0000156731). Also updated Sibinia primitus to Sibinia primita.

Corrections:

• The recommended name for Phymatolithon calcareum on the UK Priority species list and the UK Biodiversity Long List was corrected to Phymatolithon calcareum, from Phymatholithon calcareum.
• Taraxacum palustrisquamum has been amended to Taraxacum palustrisquameum.
• The Bonn convention source was updated to a daughter agreement of the Convention on Migratory Species.
• The designation for pipistrellus pygmaeus under the Bern Convention was corrected, from Bern III to Bern II.
• Added missing taxon version keys and recommended taxon names. The 'designated name' column has also been updated.

This update fixes a few errors:

• Amends the scientific name for Whimbrel to Numenius phaeopus where designated under the 'Birds of Conservation Concern 3' list.
• Removes the common name for Numenius minutus as designated under the 'Bonn Convention' (previously incorrect and the original list did not specifiy a common name for this species).
• Amends the source description for the 'Bern Convention'.
• Rectifies a difference in species between the master and summary sheets.
• Amends the taxon version keys for Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Oberea oculata and Hieracium sect. Alpestria.
• Amends the statuses of butterflies in the 2010 Red List.
• Corrects the taxon group for Coregonus clupeoides.

It also adds a taxon version key collumn into the summary sheet as requested.

This update includes the following new lists and amendments:

• A new Red List of British Butterflies, Fox, R., Warren, M.S., and Brereton, T.M. (2010), Species Status 12; 1-32. Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Peterborough.
• Bern Convention Appendix III: Special protection through 'appropriate and necessary legislative and administrative measures', of the listed wild fauna species. Any exploitation of listed animal species to be subject to regulation.
• The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994 (NI). Schedule 2: European Protected Species of Animals (1995), Amendment to Schedule 2 (2004), Schedule 3: Animals which may not be taken or killed in certain ways (1995), Schedule 4: European Protected Species of Plants.
• Revised list of nationally rare bryophytes (2010) Preston, C., Field Bryology 100
• Convention on Migratory Species Daughter Agreements: Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBATS), Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS). NB. The AEWA list has been restricted to species appearing on the British Ornithologists Union list (categories A-C only).
• We have updated the name and associated details of 'The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994’ to ‘The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010’.

The August 2009 update is perhaps the most extensively amended version of the Conservation Designations spreadsheet. It includes new and amended lists from the following sources:

• Scottish Biodiversity List of species of principal importance for biodiversity conservation
• Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 - Species of Principal Importance in England (section 41) and Wales (section 42)
• The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994 : Schedule 2: European protected species of animals, Schedule 3: Animals which may not be taken or killed in certain ways, Schedule 4: European protected species of plants.
• Birds of Conservation Concern 3. The population status of birds in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Eaton et al., British Birds 102  June 2009  pages  296–341
• The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2007 and 2008). This provides taxonomic, conservation status and distribution information on taxa that have been globally evaluated using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.
• Year 2 amendments to the Vascular Plant Red Data List for Great Britain
• Additions to Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, and amendments to take into account various geographical restrictions to various listings under the W and C Act.
• Protection of Badgers Act (1992)

We have also updated a number of Taxon Version Keys to match the recommended keys supplied by the Natural History Museum. A few errors in common names have been fixed. Source Descriptions and Designation descriptions have been updated for the UK BAP list.

1. Amendments to the UK BAP priority species list (as published in 2007) resulting in a BAP list of 1149+2-1=1150 species: a) addition of two moths mistakenly ommitted from the 2007 list of 1149 species. Rhizedra lutosa - Large Wainscot and Euxoa tritici - White-line Dart b) archiving/removal of one species: Clavaria purpurea (the British population of what was thought to be C purpurea is now known to be "within the variation of Clavaria incarnata" . C incarnata is incidentally not a UK BAP species.)

2. Addition of newly published review of dragonflies and damselflies. (JNCC Species Status Assessment report no 11)The Odonata Red Data List for Great Britain - 2008 (Caroline Daguet, Dr Graham French and Dr Pam Taylor - Eds)

3. Correction to list of Annex 1 bird species under the Wild Birds Directive (mistakenly ommitted from the spreadsheet). Addition of Greenland White-Fronted Goose Anser albifrons subsp. flavirostris and Fair Isle Wren Troglodytes troglodytes fridariensis to Annex 1.

Incorporates updated taxon version keys and standard taxon names from the Natural History Museum/NBN species dictionary. (Taxon version keys are used as unique identifiers for species). All taxa now have a taxon version key with the exception of the taxa designated as "least concern".

• Porpidia musiva is included within P. cinereoatra, and therefore there should be a single status entry of LC
• Thelidium microbolum is included within T. fontigenum, and therefore there should be a single status entry of LC and NR
• Verrucaria carnea is included within V. hochstetteri, and therefore there should be a single status entry of LC
• V. papillosa is included within V. viridula, and therefore there should be a single status entry of LC

Rationalisation of categories relating to red data listings. The global red listings have been separated from the Uk red listings. The UK red listings have been sub-divided into those based on

1. the pre 1994 IUCN guidelines

2. the 1994 IUCN guidelines

3. the 2001 IUCN guidelines

The descriptions of the designations for each of these categories has been revised
