(1992)
Hill, M.O.
Revised by Hodgetts, N.G. & Payne, A.G.
Keys illustrated by line drawings to aid the non-specialist in identifying species in this critical moss genus which is used extensively in the National Vegetation Classification.

Summary

Species of Sphagnum have a reputation among non-bryologists of being difficult to identify, yet the genus as a whole is of unparalleled importance among bryophyte genera in defining communities, and is extensively used in the National Vegetation Classification.

This key is a revision of one by Hill (1976) and is designed to be used by non-specialists to determine species of Sphagnum in the field.
