Biological Translocation: a Conservation Policy
for Britain - October 2001
Translocation of species and habitats within Britain, and the
arrival of non-native species from abroad, are major issues for
conserving Britain's characteristic biodiversity. JNCC, the
Countryside Council for Wales, English Nature and Scottish Natural
Heritage have prepared a draft policy to address the conservation
issues, which also recognises that there are other significant

Fourth Quinquennial Review of Schedule 5 and 8
of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 - December 2002
UPDATED
Every five years, the statutory nature conservation agencies
(Natural England (formally English Nature), Countryside Council for
Wales and Scottish Natural Heritage), working jointly through the
Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), are required to review
Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and to
make recommendations to the Secretary of State for the Environment,
Food and Rural Affairs for changes to these schedules. Schedule 5
lists animals (other than birds) which are specially protected, and
Schedule 8 lists plants which are specially protected. More>>

Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) in December 1999
(before the publication of the Wildlife Bill), on behalf of the
statutory conservation agencies, concerning the effectiveness of
species protection legislation in Britain. This paper contains
background briefing, advice on species protection issues and

Birds of Conservation Importance
In May 1996 the JNCC published a list of bird species that due
to their international status or their declining national
populations are of conservation importance in Britain. This list is
Birds of Conservation Importance and it outlines current priorities
for ornithological conservation effort by the statutory nature

Invertebrate specialists from across Europe met in Cardiff to
discuss conservation action for marine, freshwater and terrestrial
invertebrates. The one day colloquium on the topic of Red
Data Listing at different spatial scales explored interesting
examples of different approaches across a variety of taxa and
scales.
