Download The Marine Habitat Classification for Britain and Ireland

The following series of pdf documents and spreadsheets provide a downloadeable and "printable" versions of the Marine Habitat Classification for Briatin and Ireland.

Shallow Section (Littoral - Circalittoral)

Introduction and background

This document provides background information to version 04.05 of the Marine Habitat Classification for Britain and Ireland. It covers basic background, factors influencing marine biotopes, the development and revision of the classification, data analysis methods used, as well as guidelines for the use of the classification.

A new version of Full Hierachical List to which up to date species names was added in July 2017.

Correlation tables for biotope codes (versions 97.06 / 04.05)

This set of spreadsheets is intended to aid the translation between the version 04.05 biotopes, and the biotopes in version 97.06 of the marine habitat classification (and vice versa), for users familiar with the 1997 classification system. Where possible, the tables show the closest equivalent biotopes (or other units) in both versions of the classification. Note that it is not always possible to "translate" directly between old and new biotopes.

The marine habitat classification does not cover saltmarsh communities, as these have already been classified by the National Vegetation Classification (NVC). Users wishing to record saltmarsh communities should use the NVC codes and descriptions. The NVC chapter on saltmarsh communities is available to download here. It is an extract from:

Comparative tables

These tables enable a comparative overview over the physical and biological characteristics of biotopes. The tables are complex, and the guidance notes are provided to help users understand the information and functionality they contain.

Deep-sea Section (Bathyal - Abyssal)

Introduction and background, hierarchical list, biotope descriptions

A report accompanying the deep-sea section can be downloaded here. This includes information about how the deep-sea section was developed and how it should be used. An overall hierachy and the deep-sea biotope descriptions are available as spreadsheets in the Appendices.

Version 15.03 of the classification adds a deep-sea section to version 04.05; therefore superseding version 04.05, 97.06 and 03.02.

Information from the shallower section (up to sublittoral sediment, taken from Version 04.05) be cited as the report accompanying Version 04.05, as follows:
