To facilitate greater consistency in the use of species names
across Europe, the JNCC became involved in the European Register of
Marine Species (ERMS) project.
This two year project, commenced in April 1998 and was funded
under the European Union Marine Science and Technology (MAST)
research programme (MAST-PL97-1263). The project produced a
register of marine species in Europe to facilitate marine
biodiversity research and management, and has resulted in the first
complete compilation of marine species for European waters. It is
now available as:
Costello, M.J.; Emblow, C.; White, R. (Ed.). (2001).
European register of marine species: a
check-list of the marine species in Europe and a bibliography of
guides to their identification.
