The Freedom of Information Act 2000
The
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) gives the public a right
of access to information held by all public authorities in the
UK.
The Environmental Information Regulations 2004
The
Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR) deals with
environmental information held by public authorities in England,
Northern Ireland and Wales.
The purpose of the Acts is to make public bodies, such as JNCC,
more transparent and accountable. The right to information is
subject to certain exemptions and exceptions which are considered
on a case by case basis with consideration of the public interest
test.
Scotland has its own Scottish Environmental Information
Regulations and the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.
These are regulated by the
Scottish Information Commissioner.
Making a request
FOI
requests should be in written format (this includes e-mail, fax
etc)
EIR
correspondence do not only have to be written it can also be
requested orally
Correspondence should be legible, and include a clear description
of the information requested
The name of the applicant has to be given.
An address for reply has to be included (can be electronic)
It is helpful to state whether you would like your reply in
electronic or hard copy.

Data Protection Act
The Data Protection Act
applies to personal information and ensures that it is handled
properly. Personal information is information about you. It can be
your name, address or telephone number. Data protection enquiries
will be answered within 20 working days.
How the requests are handled
A reply will be sent within 20 working days from receipt of
request
Where an enquiry is unclear, clarification will be sought
If more time is needed before a full response can be made, a date
for this will be agreed with the correspondent.

Commissioner who is the statutory regulator.
