Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) gives the public a right of access to information held by all public authorities in the UK.

The Environmental Information Regulations 2004

The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR) deals with environmental information held by public authorities in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The purpose of the Acts is to make public bodies, such as JNCC, more transparent and accountable.  The right to information is subject to certain exemptions and exceptions which are considered on a case by case basis with consideration of the public interest test.

Scotland has its own Scottish Environmental Information Regulations and the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. These are regulated by the Scottish Information Commissioner.
