Aird & Borve, Benbecula

Aird and Borve SPA is located on the west coast of the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides off the north-west coast of Scotland. It comprises two areas. The Aird section extends south to Nunton and encompasses sand dunes, cultivated machair and croftland, wet machair and marsh with some reedbeds and Iris beds, and two small lochs. The Borve section is mainly cultivated machair, with sand dunes, croftland and some small marshes. These areas are of importance for their breeding populations of Corncrake Crex crex.

This site qualifies under Article 4.1 of the Directive (79/409/EEC) by supporting populations of European importance of the following species listed on Annex I of the Directive:
 
During the breeding season;
 
Corncrake Crex crex, 19 individuals representing at least 4.0% of the breeding population in Great Britain (1993-1997)
